Well these days i’ve developed a strange love for tweaking out my windows xp (probably because one of my ram chips burn’t out =( ) hence i found out how to tweak your windows, this post is going to show you how to make you’re installation of windows xp more stable, faster and relatively safer.. without any external software. Basically theres a catch.. this post only works for those people who are a single non-network user.. i.e. their pc is not connected to other pcs via lan. (sorry =( to everyone else)
Basically what we’re going to do is disable some unnecessary startup services that are only needed by a networked pc, this will make xp more stable and much faster (aswell as safter) with no negative effects!
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, disable the following services:
Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Fast User Switching
Human Interface Access Devices
Indexing Service (Slows the hard drive down)
Messenger
Net Logon (unnecessary unless networked on a Domain)
Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service (this is for the utterly pointless "Universal P'n'P", & leaves TCP Port 5000 wide open)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet (disabled for extra security)
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Upload Manager
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (for wireless networks)
Workstation
And you’re done! Congrats.. enjoy the speeeeed.. !!
